Lincoln Statement on 9th Anniversary of September 11, 2001 Terrorist Attacks

Statement

Date: Sept. 10, 2010
Location: Little Rock, AR

U.S. Senator Blanche Lincoln today issued the following statement as our nation approaches the ninth anniversary of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks:

"We must never forget the innocent men and women who senselessly lost their lives in New York, Virginia and Pennsylvania nine years ago, and we must continue to pray for their families and loved ones. The tragedy and its innumerable effects are still felt deeply today both at home and around the world, in the places where brave Americans continue to fight terror abroad to protect our cherished freedoms at home. These servicemembers are in our thoughts today, and we pray for their safety and well being, as well as the safety and well being of their families and loved ones.

"Over the past nine years, we have substantially changed the way our nation defends itself and the way the American people think about their own safety. Our first responders have transitioned from traditional police and firefighting responsibilities to standing on the front lines of our nation's defense. It is more important than ever that we provide first-responder programs with the funding and flexibility our brave first responders need to effectively perform their duties.

"We must continue working together on the federal, state and local levels to ensure we are providing the highest level of protection and preparedness for our communities. This includes bolstering our border security and working to improve security on our most vital and targeted facilities, such as transportation systems and nuclear reactors.

"By working with our allies, we have cut off terrorist financing, disbanded terrorist cells and training camps, and had a tremendous impact on disrupting the organization and leadership of Al-Qaeda and various other terrorist organizations. Despite this progress, there is still a lengthy battle ahead of us. There are alliances to be renewed and strengthened. More aggressive efforts can be made in combating the proliferation of chemical, biological, and nuclear weapons, and channels for terrorist financing must be vigorously tracked and closed. There are also weak and failed nations that need to be rebuilt and stabilized before they become breeding grounds for terrorism.

"Our response to this changing climate will take time. It is important that Americans demonstrate both unity and resolve as we respond to these threats to our way of life. I will continue to do all in my power to protect our nation, our troops, and our citizens from the threats of terrorism."
